Luxman L-509Z Integrated Amplifier
Luxman L-509Z is the Z-series flagship integrated built around a “separates in one chassis” architecture. It deploys independent LIFES 1.0 gain blocks for pre and power sections, the LECUA-EX electronic volume control, disciplined grounding, and short, symmetrical signal paths. Large analog meters and direct access to tone, balance, loudness, and Line Straight keep everyday operation immediate while preserving a low-noise baseline.
Architecture and Circuit Design
Dual-section LIFES implementation
Preamp and power amp sections each use Luxman’s Integrated Feedback Engine System 1.0, focusing feedback where it is most effective to maintain bandwidth and phase accuracy while remaining stable into real loudspeaker loads.
LECUA-EX level control
LECUA-EX is a precision, electronically switched resistor ladder that preserves channel tracking at low levels and avoids the wear and variability of mechanical tracks. Its integration enables accurate balance trim and repeatable level steps.
Output stage and power supply
A three-stage Darlington, triple-parallel push-pull output section is supported by a high-capacity EI-core transformer and eight large filter capacitors. The layout minimizes loop area and keeps AC fields away from small-signal paths to reduce hum and modulation noise.
Connectivity and Control
Inputs and signal management
Balanced XLR and multiple line-level RCA inputs accommodate a range of sources. Line Straight bypasses tone and balance networks when the most direct path is desired, while the standard path provides precise bass/treble correction and loudness compensation for low-level listening.
Integration and expansion
Dual PRE OUT connections allow subwoofers, external crossovers, or additional amplifiers. MAIN IN lets the L-509Z function purely as a power amplifier under an external controller, useful for home theater bypass or future system changes.
Speaker interface
Two sets of robust binding posts support A, B, or A+B operation. Protection engages silently at power on and power off and during abnormal conditions, preventing thumps or relay chatter.
Phono EQ
An onboard phono equalizer supports moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges with selectable MC-H/MC-L gain. Short internal routing, regulated rails, and careful grounding are used to maintain low noise and accurate RIAA equalization without an external stage.
Headphone Output
Front-panel 6.3 mm and 4.4 mm jacks provide flexibility for conventional and balanced-wired headphones. Low output impedance and independent grounding improve control; speaker outputs mute automatically on insertion.
Everyday Use
Meter illumination is even and legible; the aluminum remote handles input selection and volume. Front-panel controls have firm, repeatable detents. Status is clear at a glance, and core functions are available without menus.
System Matching
With its higher current delivery and damping, the L-509Z pairs well with stand-mounts and demanding floorstanders. It mates cleanly with neutral to slightly warm sources. The internal MM/MC stage supports a wide range of cartridges, simplifying turntable setup. For very large rooms or unusually low-sensitivity speakers, PRE OUT enables external amplification while retaining the same control surface.
Setup Notes
- Provide several inches of ventilation above and to the sides.
- Use Line Straight when tone shaping is unnecessary.
- For subwoofers, feed PRE OUT and align crossover and phase by measurement or careful listening.
- Separate analog interconnects from power cords and routers to minimize background noise.
Position in the Lineup
Relative to L-505Z, the L-509Z adds the dual-section LIFES topology, higher output capability, the LECUA-EX control block, and broader I/O (including dual PRE OUT and expanded phono options). Compared with L-507Z, it pushes supply capacity, output architecture, and control precision further toward a reference integrated design.
Who It Is For
Listeners who want reference level drive and control in a single chassis, with balanced input, MM/MC phono, flexible pre/power break in, and straightforward daily operation without giving up the clarity and stability associated with separate pre/power components.
