Marten Mingus Quintet 2

The Marten Mingus Quintet 2 is a high-performance 3-way bass reflex floorstanding loudspeaker representing the second generation of the Mingus Quintet design. Handcrafted in Gothenburg, Sweden, this model features Accuton Cell technology drivers including a pure diamond tweeter, delivering full-range performance with extended bandwidth and exceptional clarity.

Position in the Marten Lineup

The Mingus series sits above the Parker range and below the flagship Coltrane collection in Marten's hierarchy. Named after jazz legend Charles Mingus, the series employs more sophisticated driver technology and cabinet construction than the Parker models. The Quintet 2 is the entry point into the Mingus family, positioned below the larger Mingus Septet and Mingus Orchestra. Introduced in 2022, the Quintet 2 incorporates a new midrange driver, revised crossover, improved cabinet damping, and higher sensitivity compared to the original Mingus Quintet.

Driver Configuration

The Mingus Quintet 2 employs five Accuton Cell technology drivers in a 3-way configuration. A 0.75-inch pure diamond tweeter handles frequencies above 4,000Hz, chosen for diamond's exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio and thermal conductivity. A 5-inch ceramic midrange driver covers the critical vocal range from 370Hz to 4,000Hz, selected for its high internal damping and minimal distortion. Three 7-inch aluminum sandwich honeycomb bass drivers extend the low-frequency response, featuring long excursion, hidden surrounds, and extremely low distortion.

All drivers are time-aligned on a single vertical axis at the baffle surface, ensuring sound waves from all five drivers reach the listener simultaneously.

First-Order Crossover

The Mingus Quintet 2 employs Marten's signature first-order crossover topology, which has been integral to the Mingus sound since the series inception. First-order filters provide perfect time and phase coherence, meaning all frequencies are generated at the exact same moment as originally recorded. The crossover points are set at 370Hz and 4,000Hz. Components include copper foil air-core coils, silver/copper foil capacitors, and Jorma Design internal wiring.

Cabinet Construction

The tapered cabinet is constructed from 25-40mm fibre laminate with internal bracing and advanced damping materials. Solid wood tops and bottoms in walnut or oak (or optional lacquered fibreboard in Piano Black, Grey, Plum, Red, or Gold) reduce resonance while adding visual distinction. The cabinet's tapered shape minimizes internal reflections and presents a sleek visual profile.

Marten Isolators, developed with IsoAcoustics, decouple the speaker from the floor via mirror-polished stainless steel outriggers. The downward-firing bass reflex port benefits from the gap created by the isolator feet.

Bass Adjustment

A four-position bass control switch allows adjustment of output between 50-140Hz, centered around 80-100Hz. This feature enables optimization for different room acoustics without compromising phase behavior or overall voicing.

Standard vs. Statement Edition

The Mingus Quintet 2 is available in two configurations: Standard and Statement Edition.

Standard Edition

The Standard edition features high-quality crossover components and Jorma Design internal wiring, delivering the full Mingus Quintet 2 sonic character with exceptional clarity and transparency.

Statement Edition

The Statement Edition upgrades to Jorma Statement internal cables and higher-grade crossover components. This configuration further refines resolution and transparency for listeners seeking the ultimate expression of the design.

Performance Characteristics

With 88dB sensitivity and a nominal 6-ohm impedance (minimum 3.4 ohms), the Mingus Quintet 2 requires quality amplification but presents a relatively benign load. Power handling is 300 watts. The frequency response of 24Hz to 100kHz (±2dB) provides exceptional bandwidth in both directions, with bass extension that eliminates the need for subwoofer augmentation.

Summary

The Marten Mingus Quintet 2 delivers sophisticated Mingus series performance in a room-friendly format. The pure diamond tweeter, ceramic midrange, and aluminum sandwich bass drivers combine with a first-order crossover to provide exceptional time coherence and transparency. The Statement Edition upgrade offers ultimate refinement. For listeners seeking full-range performance with Marten's signature clarity and musicality, the Marten Mingus Quintet 2 represents an outstanding choice.

  • Diamond Domes: Pure and Brilliant

Pure diamond is the ultimate material for speaker membranes – that’s why we use a Cell diamond tweeter from Accuton. In the high-frequency range, its stiffness-to-weight ratio and internal sound velocity are unsurpassed.

The sonic character of our diamond tweeter is not what you might expect. Our crossover has been carefully designed to bring out the pure and clear sound of this precious stone, softening any harshness.

Diamond is also the best heat conductor known to man, which is essential for loudspeaker membranes, providing the best heatsink for the voice coil – resulting in high power handling and very low compression.

  • Ceramic Domes: Advanced Tech, Natural Sound.

Stiff ceramic is light, yet extremely rigid, making it one of the best materials for speaker membranes – it’s also known as Sapphire.

Our ceramic domes have a high internal damping factor, due to a refined electrochemical process. The membrane has a high material resonance frequency, meaning distortion is minimal. This offers a level of clarity that is perfect for high end speaker domes.

  • Bass Drivers: Low Frequencies. Low distortion.

Cell bass driver units have long excursion, extremely low distortion levels and a hidden surround. Made of aluminium sandwich honeycomb, the drivers offer rich, dynamic bass performance with a powerful presentation.

    Cabinets: Form and Function Unified

Mingus Quintet 2 is tapered to create less sound reflections and a sleek form. Crafted with the finest materials, it is finished with solid wood tops and bottoms to reduce resonance.

We use specially selected, medium-density fibreboard with optimum rigidity to create high-quality, resonance-free cabinets. The internal structure and bracing keep the cabinet rigid, whilst inside the resonance is further dampened with advanced materials.

Each cabinet is finished with precision veneer and lacquering. The lacquer is carefully built up of 7 layers, each hand-polished in between drying.

  • Tops and Bottom: Finish How You Want

Mingus Quintet 2 can be finished with tops and bottoms in solid wood or high-gloss lacquered fibreboard.

Opt for, carefully selected walnut or oak to give you a warm, natural finish, or for those more bold among us, there are five contemporary gloss finishes: Piano Black, Piano Grey, Piano Plum, Piano Red and Piano Gold.

  • Marten Internal Wiring

Internal Wiring: Premium Cables for Pure Sound.

We use Jorma internal wiring, for exemplary quality and performance. Handmade in Sweden, the cables use separate + and – for enhanced shielding and the highest quality copper.

This offers natural, transparent sound; the perfect choice for our speakers.

Cables are integral components, so they must work harmoniously with our design and build. Jorma delivers exactly what a Marten speaker needs.

Feet: A New Level of Isolation

The reduction of resonance is important to the design of our speakers – it can mean the difference between a good speaker and a great speaker. With IsoAcoustics we created Marten Isolators. This precision product allows the cabinet to be completely isolated from the floor, reducing resonance and distortion – leaving the soundstage free.

  • Upgrade: Statement Edition

Mingus Quintet 2 can be upgraded to Statement Edition, featuring Jorma Statement internal cables and higher quality crossover components.

  • Crossover: First Class as Always

The first order crossover has been integral to Mingus since inception. With refinements, today’s crossover is even better – it’s more open, cleaner and more dynamic. And very powerful in the bass frequencies.

The first order crossover makes it possible to have perfect time and phase coherence; and flawless time coincidence. This means that all registers are generated at the exact same moment, as it was recorded.
