Unison Research Unico Nuovo Integrated Amplifier
The Unico Nuovo, like the Unico Primo and the previous UnicoP, is an integrated amplifier based on a "single triode stage per channel" design. However, it distinguishes itself by using two ECC83 (12AX7) valves with a new biasing solution and a parallel double-triode design. By doubling the number of triodes (compared to the Unico Primo) and employing a parallel configuration, the Unico Nuovo delivers a more refined sonic performance.
The new biasing solution, inspired by designs found in high-end phono stages and referred to as "ionic bias," leverages the Unison Research-designed power supply, which works in tandem with the "level shifter and signal follower" stages that follow the triode stage. This configuration provides accurate, audiophile-grade sound while allowing for automatic bias adjustment as the valves settle in and age, ensuring longer-lasting and more reliable performance.
In the driver stages, the output devices are fed by a symmetrical current mirror stage using bipolar transistors. This approach minimizes phase distortion and results in a sound delivery that retains the desired valve characteristics. The output devices, which are Power MOSFETs arranged symmetrically, are powered by the same power supply stage with a unique configuration to maintain consistent voltage delivery. Overall, this design provides improved channel separation and balance, greater efficiency, and enhanced musical detail.
The aluminum front panels of the Unico series feature a clean and stylish look, achieved through a new sandblasting and anodizing process. The sandblasting involves striking the aluminum plate with microscopic ceramic beads at room temperature, creating a uniform and matte finish. The anodizing process then forms a thin layer of aluminum oxide on the surface, which enhances its mechanical resistance and durability. The end result is a visually stunning finish that complements the high-quality performance of this prestigious piece of equipment.
