Marten

The Truth and Beauty of Natural Sound

"When I started making speakers, I wanted to hear something that didn't exist. I wanted to hear music as it was in real life. Sound in our natural environment isn't coloured; I wanted to make a speaker that accurately reproduced the truth and beauty of natural sound."
Leif Mårten Olofsson, Founder & Chief Designer

Marten Design Philosophy:

Marten stands for those who stand for music. The company believes that by accurately reproducing sound without coloration, speakers can create moments that move you. Every Marten loudspeaker is designed for discerning listeners who want to hear reality and feel it in their gut. This pursuit of sonic truth guides every design decision, from driver selection to crossover topology. Where others claim uncoloured sound but fall short, Marten remains committed to transparency and authenticity in reproduction.

Established in 1998

The Marten story begins long before 1998. In the early 1900s, Leif's grandfather Josef Olofsson built violins using Stradivarius as his benchmark. These instruments were played by Mårten Larsson, Leif's maternal grandfather, whose name would later inspire the company. In the 1970s, young Leif began building speakers in the family home, a passion that would eventually transform into a business. The first Marten speaker, named Mingus after the jazz legend, launched what has grown into five distinct series, a professional recording studio, and a record label. Today, Marten remains a family business run by Leif and his brothers Jörgen and Lars Olofsson, crafting loudspeakers by hand on Sweden's west coast.

Founder and Chief Designer

Leif Olofsson is a co-founder of Marten and a key figure behind the company’s engineering focus on low distortion, controlled resonances, and time-coherent driver integration. His approach prioritizes rigid, well-damped enclosures and advanced ceramic and diamond drivers to reduce breakup and preserve resolution.

The Pursuit of Sonic Truth

Pure Diamond Drivers

Pure diamond is the ultimate material for speaker membranes. In the high-frequency range, its stiffness-to-weight ratio and internal sound velocity are unsurpassed by any other material. Diamond is also the best heat conductor known, providing an ideal heatsink for the voice coil and enabling high power handling with very low compression. The sonic character of Marten's diamond tweeters defies expectations. Rather than sounding "hard" or "overly brilliant," they simply disappear, leaving only pure music. Carefully designed crossovers bring out the clear, natural sound of diamond while eliminating any harshness.

First-Order Crossovers

Marten never follows the path of least resistance. The company worked tirelessly to refine crossovers that work perfectly with Accuton Cell drivers. First-order crossovers make it possible to achieve perfect time and phase coherence with flawless time coincidence. This means all frequencies are generated at the exact same moment they were recorded, just like live music. While first-order filters demand exceptional driver behavior, Marten's custom Accuton drivers rise to the challenge, pushing breakup modes far beyond the audible range.

Ceramic Cell Drivers

Hard ceramic is light yet extremely rigid, making it one of the finest materials for speaker membranes. Marten's ceramic domes feature high internal damping from a refined electrochemical process and high material resonance frequencies that minimize distortion. Developed in close collaboration with German manufacturer Accuton (Thiel & Partner), these are not off-the-shelf components but custom designs reflecting decades of partnership. The Cell Concept technology ensures excellent pistonic behavior, steady decay of higher-order harmonics, and identical acoustic centers across the frequency range.
